Range of materials handling goods to order
With the rise of plastic production in recent years, researchers have been studying new and bizarre ways of recycling.
A recent study showed that certain bacteria in the guts of mealworms will efficiently break down certain polymers such as polystyrene!
The researchers speculated whether polystyrene was the only edible plastic for the mealworms, or whether the bacteria in the worms’ guts might be able to eat other sorts of plastic, too.
To check, they used another plastic called polyethylene. Chemically, this plastic is very different from polystyrene but the worms found it equally as nutritious!
This overall shows that biology and living organisms could really help in regards to recycling!
