Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) is the wireless non-contact use of radio frequency electromagnetic fields to transfer data. This is for the purposes of automatically identifying and tracking tags attached to objects such as boxes and pallets.
The tags contain electronically stored information, in read only. This is a single number like a barcode where others can hold data such as product names. Some are powered by magnetic fields and read at short ranges, whereas others use a power source such as a battery or energy collected from an electromagnetic field. The battery powered tags have the advantage of being operated from hundreds of meters, meaning the tag does not have to be within sight of the reader. It is also possible to permanently embed the tag in an object.
RTP Materials Handling can supply boxes and pallets with these already embedded or attached.
